Most previous studies have reported the occurrence of *A. phagocytophilum*, *H. canis*, *C. burnetii*, *E. canis*, *B. gibsoni* and *Babesia* spp. in black-tailed deer \[[@CR9],[@CR10],[@CR11],[@CR17]-[@CR19],[@CR26]\]. However, the occurrence of *P. hyophagus* is rare in deer in Europe and North America \[[@CR26],[@CR27]\]. Previous studies have described the occurrence of *P. hyophagus* in wild boar from Germany \[[@CR10],[@CR28]\], North America \[[@CR29]\], and Japan \[[@CR11]\]. The seroprevalence of *P. hyophagus* in black-tailed deer from North Carolina was 1.7% \[[@CR27]\]. In contrast, no antibodies to *P. hyophagus* were detected in this study.

In most studies, antibodies to *H. abortus* have been detected in the sera of animals from East and South Asia, North America, Australia and Europe \[[@CR9],[@CR30]-[@CR32]\]. In our study, the highest (93.2%) seroprevalence was found in the *H. abortus* positive black-tailed deer. This finding is similar to previous reports, in which the seroprevalence of *H. abortus* in black-tailed deer (42-100%) was higher than the seroprevalence (12-50%) in wild boar \[[@CR10],[@CR33]\].
